About Telehealth
Highfields Psychology offers telehealth services to clients who find it difficult to attend sessions either due to illness, personal circumstances or distance.
-
Telehealth is an easy way to provide health services over the phone or through video conferencing platforms. It can be just as effective as an in-person appointment and is often much more convenient for clients as it means you can connect with your clinician without having to leave your home.
If you have any questions about our telehealth services, please speak with your clinician or with our friendly administration team.
-
Equipment
You’ll need a reliable internet connection and a computer, tablet or smartphone that includes a camera and microphone so we can see and hear each other.
Joining the Telehealth call
We will send you an email confirming your appointment and giving you the telehealth meeting link for your session. When it is time for your appointment, click on the link in your email or SMS message. You should see a message saying that you’re in an online waiting room and we will let you into the meeting soon. Please be ready a few minutes before your appointment time.
During the session
You can sit anywhere you like during the appointment but we recommend that you choose somewhere comfortable and quiet where you won’t be distracted. The appointment will feel very similar to coming into the practice. You will see the same clinician and be working towards your agreed goals.
-
Confidentiality and privacy standards remain rigorous for telehealth services also and your clinician will ensure that there is no one else in the room with them during the session. Your clinician will not record the session without your permission.
You are asked to respect the privacy of your clinician by agreeing not to make recordings of the sessions and not to use the material from sessions for purposes other than therapy. If you want to record the sessions you must seek the clinician's consent to do so.
FAQ’s
-
To get a mental health treatment plan you need to book a longer appointment with your GP. Advise your GP that you would like to talk about your mental health concerns and would like to get a mental health treatment plan. They will ask you some personal questions about your thoughts and feelings and may get you to complete a questionnaire or a simple psychological checklist. It is important to be as open and honest as possible with your GP when answering these questions. Your GP will then fill in the plan and set some mental health goals with you.
Once completed, your GP will send your mental health treatment plan along with a referral letter to our team at Highfields Psychology, or they may give it to you, to present at your first appointment with us. You must have this paperwork at the time of your first appointment with your psychologist in order to receive a Medicare rebate.
Your initial referral and mental health treatment plan will prescribe six therapy sessions. After this, you will need to have a review with your GP where you’ll discuss how you are progressing against the goals set out in your plan. If you and your GP agree that further therapy is required, your plan can be extended to 10 sessions for the year.

Please check with your health fund to see if you are covered.
Receipts can be emailed if needed for third party claims. Please advise your clinician if this is needed.

Yes – These services will incur a fee as they can be time consuming and extensive. Please discuss this with your psychologist.

People often feel an assortment of emotions leading up to their first consultation, and a great relief once they get things off their chest. You don’t need to have your thoughts in order, or a coherent story to present to your session. Just show up as you are.
The first appointment is where your psychologist will start to dive into your world and start to figure out what kind of therapy will resonate best with you. You can expect them to gently guide you through and carefully listen to your concerns and experiences. A trauma focused approach will guide these appointments, ensuring you leave you appointment feeling heard and safe, not retraumatised.
